Alice Peisch

Massachusetts State Representative

 

State Representative Alice Hanlon Peisch was elected in 2003 to serve the 14th Norfolk District of Massachusetts, which consists of the town of Weston, the town of Wellesley, and precinct 10 of Natick. A graduate of Smith College and Suffolk University Law School, she is a resident of Wellesley, where she has acted as chair of the town’s school and finance committees. Representative Peisch also served as the Wellesley Town Clerk from 2000-2003.

A strong advocate for public education, the Representative is a member of the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Education, the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, and the House Committee on Steering, Policy, and Scheduling. Representative Peisch is currently in her third term as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Fritz Fleischmann

Dean of Faculty, Babson College

 

Educated in Germany, England and the United States, Fritz Fleischmann received his doctorate summa cum laude from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1983, the year he joined the Babson faculty. At Babson, he has served as founding chair of the undergraduate honors program, chair of the Arts and Humanities Division, associate director of the Glavin Center, and Dean of Faculty. He was awarded the Tomasso Term Chair in 1991 and the William R. Dill Governance Chair in 1997.

Barbra is the founder and Executive Director of the Green Roundtable. She collaborates with cities, institutions and companies to transform their internal practices to improve performance, profitability and sustainability. GRT organizes and facilitates a forum for proactive dialogue among diverse professions, and provides resources and expertise to the development, design and construction community. Under her leadership, GRT is New England's regional Affiliate for the US Green Building Council, and is also active with legislative and policy initiatives.

With a diverse background in fine arts, social psychology and fourteen years in architecture and consulting, Barbra brings a variety of skills, from decision making and creative collaboration, to technical work optimizing building system integration, quality and project performance.

Tom is President and CEO of American Capital Energy, a national solar power system developer. American Capital Energy provides customized solar power systems to large corporations in virtually every major industry helping customers significantly lower operational costs by reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.

Prior to American Capital Energy Tom directed sales for SCHOTT Solar, a top-5 manufacturer and marketer of solar electric wafers, cells, and panels. Tom also worked for Green Mountain Energy, a start-up that quickly became the nation’s leading retailer of renewable energy.

Tom has a passion for Solar Electricity and sees it as a major new area for energy generation in the U.S. and across the globe. Tom lives in Lyme, New Hampshire with his wife, Shannon, and children, Katherine (9), Matthew (8), and Nicholas (6).

     

Anthony Piermarini

Principal, Studio Luz Architects

 

Anthony Piermarini is a founding principal of Studio Luz Architects located in Boston, MA. He is a Massachusetts Registered Architect, a member of the Boston Society of Architects, the American Institute of Architects, and is Boston Artist Certified. Through his work, Anthony pushes the limits of materials, fabrication techniques and emerging technology to bring forth the best possible architectural results. He has experience with a broad range of commercial, institutional and residential projects and oversees every aspect of the work for his clients. Anthony received his BARCH from Cornell University and MARCH2 from the Harvard Design School. He was recently nominated for the National American Institute of Architects, Young Architect’s Award. He is currently an Adjunct Faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and has also been an invited design critic/speaker at Harvard, MIT, Yale, Cornell University, UC Berkeley, as well as other national and international venues.

Nick d'Arbeloff

Co-Director, New England Clean Energy Council

 

As Co-Executive Director for the Council, Nick drives activity in the areas of Innovation and Growth, and plays a leading role in directing the activities of the Innovation Task Force and the CEO Council. He is also heavily involved with the Council’s policy efforts. Previously, he served as the Executive Director for the New England Energy Innovation Collaborative (NEEIC).

Before joining NEEIC, he was the founder and CEO of Conjoin, a developer of sales productivity software for corporate sales teams. The company was acquired by Intranets.com (subsequently acquired by WebEx).

Previously, Nick co-founded and served as VP Marketing for Wildfire Communications, which brought to market a voice recognition-based electronic assistant for managing all of an individual’s telephone activities. Wildfire was acquired by Orange PLC, now a subsidiary of France Telecom.

Earlier in his career, he served as Vice President of Marketing for C-bridge Internet Solutions, Director of Marketing for PRI Automation, and Product Manager for Apollo Computer.

Nick is a representative of The Climate Project, trained by former Vice President Al Gore to educate audiences about the science underlying global climate change. He serves on the Board of the Carlisle Conservation Foundation and the Mass Audubon Council.

Nick holds a BA from Georgetown University.

     

Robert Pratt

Senior Vice President (Climate and Energy), Kendall Foundation

 

Rob Pratt is Senior Vice President of the Henry P. Kendall Foundation, heading up the Foundation’s climate change program. By catalyzing “massive energy efficiency implementation” in New England through programs such as the $100 million, 5 year program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as well as advocating cutting edge, clean energy policy development, the Foundation hopes to demonstrate that significant greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced in the short to mid-term. Rob formerly served as Director of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Renewable Energy Trust (RET), the $250 million fund through which he developed a series of innovative programs designed to promote the use of clean energy technologies and build investment in the state’s renewable energy industry.

Mr. Pratt is Chairman of the board of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), promoting energy efficiency policies and their implementation in developing countries, a non-profit organization that he founded in 1984. He serves as Treasurer and is on the board of the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE), the largest non-profit organization in the U.S. solely dedicated to the promotion and acceleration of energy efficiency. Rob is on the board of the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA), the organization of 17 renewable energy state funds; and is Chairman Emeritus and a member of the Advisory Board of the American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. focused on bringing renewable energy into the economic mainstream in the U.S. He also serves on the board of the Cambridge Energy Alliance.

Prior to directing the Renewable Energy Trust, Mr. Pratt was the founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Energia Global International, Ltd. (EGI), one of the leading renewable energy companies in Latin America. Founded in 1991 as a startup, EGI (now Enel Latin America) became a major development company in the region, with hydroelectric, wind and distribution assets in Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador and Chile Mr. Pratt received an MPA degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a JD degree from Georgetown University Law Center, and a BA degree in government with high honors from Wesleyan University.

     

Phil Giudice

Commissioner, Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources

 

Phil was appointed Commissioner of Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources, July 2007. He is a geologist (B.S. from University of New Hampshire and M.S. in Economic Geology from the University of Arizona) and management professional (M.B.A. from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth) with 30 years experience in the energy industry. Phil serves as board member, board executive committee member and treasurer of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative as well as a board member of both the Commonwealth’s Energy Facilities Siting Board and the Center for Effective Philanthropy. Prior to joining DOER, Phil served as board member and Senior Vice President at EnerNOC, a start-up company providing electricity demand-management services to businesses, institutions, utilities, and grid operators to obtain savings for businesses and institutions and relieve stress on the electric system. He was also a Senior Partner, and leader of Mercer Management Consulting’s global energy utilities practice.

Eric Graham

Director of New Business Development, EnerNOC

 

During his professional career Mr. Graham’s has conducted business on a truly global scale. He has started and managed business that have touched on every continent and engaged in cross borders trade in more than 30 countries.

In his current role, Mr. Graham is helping EnerNOC to grow the Demand Response--Black-out prevention market. This program provides grid operators; utilities and their customers energy efficiency options that help reduce the need to build new power plants.

Mr. Graham holds two patents issued globally that covers ultra low temperature refrigeration and transportation methods. This method, called the ColdWave System, use recycled CO2 as a refrigeration method. This cryogenic containerized transport system can hold temperatures as low as -80 degrees F and is a true alternative to transporting large quantities of fresh products by air freight. The use of recycled CO2 for refrigeration in transport also help remove the need for CO2 and other NEW pollution emissions created by burning fossil fuel-->to create electricity-->to run compressors-->to cool containers.

Mr. Graham holds a Finance & Insurance degree from Northeastern University, and received his MBA from Babson’s FW Olin Graduate School of Business with concentrations in Finance and Entrepreneurship.

     

Martin Flusberg

Co-Founder and President, Aclara Software (formerly Nexus Energy Software)

 

Martin Flusberg is co-founder and President of Aclara Software (formerly Nexus Energy Software), now part of the ESCO Technologies Utilities Solutions Group. Aclara provides software solutions to the energy industry that unlock the power of energy data. Martin has over 25 years of experience in the software industry, and has held senior executive positions at several software companies.

Immediately prior to Nexus, he was President of REALink Systems, a pioneering software firm serving the real estate industry. Before that, Martin was Director of the Commercial Systems Division at TASC, with responsibility for the firm's Lodestar software product line for the utility industry; since morphed into LODESTAR Corp/Oracle. He has also served as CEO of Multisystems, a software and consulting firm serving the transportation industry. Martin has an MS degree in Civil Engineering from MIT and a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering from City University of NY.

     

Kelly Warner

Founder and CEO, Deerpath Energy

 

Kellogg L. (Kelly) Warner is Founder and CEO of Deerpath Energy, a venture-backed company whose mission is to develop community integrated renewable energy systems. Prior to starting Deerpath, Kelly spent five years as President and CEO of KEMA Inc., the North American subsidiary of KEMA NV, and was Co-Managing Director of KEMA’s 600-person Global Consulting Unit. KEMA is a Dutch-based international energy consulting, testing, and certification business whose service offerings span the electric industry value-chain, including generation, transmission, distribution, and retail / demand-side. In addition to his management responsibilities at KEMA, Kelly was responsible for thought leadership and strategic engagements in the areas of energy efficiency, energy industry restructuring, grid modernization, and sustainable energy solutions.

Prior to KEMA, Kelly was President and CEO of XENERGY Inc., a US-based energy consulting and services business. XENERGY was a pioneer and recognized leader in the energy efficiency industry, innovating a number of new business concepts related to demand side management and retail energy services. Kelly has also managed a broad portfolio of unregulated utility business units as President of NGE Enterprises, the unregulated subsidiary of Energy East Corporation, and was an analyst at Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

Mr. Warner holds an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University and a B.A. in American Studies from Williams College.

Cary Bullock

Vice President, GreenFuel Technologies

 

Bullock has extensive experience as an investor in and as CEO of high-tech, energy services-related startup companies. He has published extensively in the area of energy services and was named by Hart's Energy Markets as one of the top 100 most influential industry leaders in the gas and electric industry in the 20th century. Prior to his tenure at GreenFuel, Bullock was Chairman, Co-founder and CEO of Excelergy Corporation. He has founded and launched successful energy services companies such as FPL Services and Econoler/USA, and served as a VP of Kenentech Corporation, providing management consulting services to electric and gas utilities for development of non-regulated energy service companies and joint ventures.

     

Richard Chleboski

Co-Founder and current Director of Strategic Planning, Evergreen Solar

 

Richard Chleboski co-founded Evergreen Solar in 1994. In December 2007, Mr. Chleboski assumed the position of Vice President of Strategy and Business Development. Prior to that, Mr. Chleboski served as Vice President of Worldwide Expansion since February 2006. Mr. Chleboski also served as the Company’s Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for 12 years. He also served as a director from June 1995 to May 2003.

Mr. Chleboski worked at Mobil Solar Energy Corporation for seven years where he was the Strategic Planner focusing on developing long-range business plans working with strategic partners. Prior to becoming Strategic Planner, he was a Process Engineer responsible for innovating the operation of Mobil Solar’s manufacturing line as the expert on its performance.

Mr. Chleboski received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Boston College.

     

Christopher Sauer

President and Chief Executive Officer, Ocean Renewable Power Company

 

Mr. Sauer is President, Chief Executive Office and a member of the Board of Ocean Renewable Power Company, LLC and has the ultimate day-to-day responsibility for management of the company. He has a wealth of experience (over 30 years) in the formation and management of startup energy and environmental technology companies, development, permitting and financing of power generation projects, and engineering and construction of major industrial projects.

David Marcus

CEO and Director, General Compression

 

David Marcus has been a wind energy investor since 2002. He is the Managing Partner of Chestnut Capital, which is a partner, investor, or shareholder in several wind energy developers, including Ridgeline, Midwest Renewable, NedPower, Greenlight, Windworks, Foresight, and the Clean Power Income Fund. Several of these entities have since been sold to larger European power companies, including Shell, Iberdrola, and BP. Chestnut has also invested in several wind energy technologies, including Princeton Power, Fallbrook Technologies, and Mechanology. In addition, Chestnut has invested in several Clean Tech/ Green Energy Companies, including Seahorse Power, Protonex, Metabolix, GreenFuel, Wilson TurboPower, Verdant Power, and Geo2. Chestnut is also an LP in the Mass Green Energy Fund and two energy funds at Carlyle/ Riverstone. David is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Princeton University, and the founder and former CEO of APEX Property Exchange, a financial services firm he founded in 1989 and sold to JPMorgan in 2002. APEX processed over B$25 per year in like-kind exchange transactions for its clients. He is a Trustee of the Boston Children's Museum.

     

Tom Michelman

Founder and President, Boreal Renewable Inc.

 

In August of 2003 Tom Michelman co-founded Boreal Renewable Energy Development to cost effectively implement distributed generation renewable energy projects. Boreal's focus is utility scale distributed wind generation and hydroelectric development at commercial, industrial, and institutional sites. In addition Boreal has consulted on various aspects of the renewable energy industry. Tom's area of expertise include: retail and wholesale electric markets, financial pro forma scenario analysis, processing of historical energy consumption, and analysis of current and future utility tariffs, and wholesale and REC prices. Prior to founding Boreal, Tom worked as an energy consultant for KEMA (formerly XENERGY) for over 10 years. Tom has a B.S in Resource Economics from the University of Rhode Island, and B.A. in Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences and Political Science from Northwestern University.

     

Walter Sass

President, Second Wind

 

Mr. Sass has been president of Second Wind, Inc. since founding the company with Kenneth Cohn in 1980. Sass's technical marketing and leadership led to the industry's first wind-specific data logger in 1981 and the first third-party wind farm supervisory system in 1984. For successive generations of each since then, Sass has presented and moderated at American Wind Energy Association conferences. He has a BSEE from Tufts, and did graduate work at URI, UMass-Amherst and Northeastern.

Rob Day

Rob Day joined @Ventures in 2007, and operates out of the firm’s Boston-area office. He currently holds an observer seat on the board of directors of Powerit Holdings, Inc.

Prior to joining the @Ventures team, Rob was an investor with Expansion Capital Partners for over two years, where he was an investment principal responsible for various aspects of that firm’s clean technology venture capital activities, including investments in Tiger Optics, SensorTran, Orion Energy Systems, and World Energy Labs.

Rob was formerly a consultant with Bain & Company, where he worked with companies and evaluated private equity transactions in the energy/ utilities, telecom, IT, health care, and retail industries. Earlier in his career, Rob was also a founding member of the World Resources Institute's Sustainable Enterprise Program, where he developed partnerships with companies across a wide range of industries to develop new business opportunities with economic, environmental and social benefits. Rob is the co-author of The Next Bottom Line: Making Sustainable Development Tangible, co-leads the Renewable Energy Business Network (www.rebn.org), and authors the website Cleantech Investing (www.cleantechvc.com). Rob received his MBA at Kellogg Graduate School of Management (Northwestern University), and his BA at Swarthmore College.

     

Alexander "Hap" Ellis

Partner, RockPort Capital

 

Mr. Ellis has extensive operating experience in electric power and renewable energy. He was a member of the management team at Kenetech Corporation from 1991-1995, where he was responsible for expanding the portfolio of wind generation opportunities and introducing wind into utility systems across the country. He later was a partner in several electric-related companies, including most recently Casco Bay Energy Company, LLC, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duke Energy, which developed and owns a 520MW gas-fired electric generating station, and Acadia Bay Energy Company, LLC, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Allegheny Energy which developed a 638MW gas-fired electric generating station. In 1998 Mr. Ellis joined RockPort Partners, a merchant bank specializing in the energy and environmental sectors and helped form the venture fund in 2001.

He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Catalytic Solutions, Inc., Comverge, Inc, Powerspan Corporation, PPT Research, Inc., Southwest WindPower, ISE Corporation, BayCorp Holdings, and Pilgrim Insurance Company. He is also a member of the Finance and Administration Committee of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, as well as a Council member.

Mr. Ellis received a BA from Colorado College and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.

     

Sissi Liu

Industry Investment & Development Manager, Massachusetts Technology Collaborative

 

Sissi Liu is the Manager of the $8 million Seed Fund, an initiative of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust that invests in and provides assistance to renewable energy startups in Massachusetts. Since 2004, Seed has invested in 11 companies that are commercializing a diverse range of renewable energy technologies. In addition, she acts as lead LP of the Massachusetts Green Energy Fund, a $17 million venture capital fund. Prior to joining the Trust, Sissi was a consultant at Sentech, Inc., a Bethesda, Maryland-based clean energy consulting firm, where she led policy and market research and analyses on the clean energy sector. She also has experience in startup business management and corporate finance. Sissi hold a B.A. from Wellesley College and a M.P.P from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
